Games 62-63: Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies 9:12, 6:5
Strange couple of games really. First strange thing: with the hitting and all, the Dodgers still *lost* the hitting duel in the middle game of the three-game series, even though we outhit the Rockies 14 to 12. Perhaps leaving eight men on (as opposed to Colorado's only three) had something to do with it? Nomah and Kemp left three men on apiece, though they can hardly be blamed for the loss.
(1) The Joe Beimel Saga: I'm really sorry for Joe. He was almost spotless in 15 games May 1 through June 2 and then in two games (vs PHI and this one @COL) he gets roughed up for 7ER on 7 hits in 0.2 IP. This misfortune brings his ERA from 1.89 to 5.03 within a span of two games. Talk about taking a hit!
(2) Brett Tomko is the number one starter... that I'd have replaced by Chad Billingsley as soon as possible. At least Jae Seo and Odalis Perez do have some scarce success in very limited circumstances (Seo out of the bullpen lately and Perez vs the Giants). Tomko, on the other hand, easily lost his fourth straight decision and did not win a game for almost a month (May 15).
(3) But the question is: what do you do with Bombko? Put him in the bullpen and use him in blowouts either way? We're looking at 1-2 games every week only (the Dodgers have had 10 or 11 blowouts either way in May and June so far). But can he keep the lead (did I hear "Lance Carter")? Or get outs? I don't know, mostly because Brett has been providing inconclusive evidence on whether he can be up to the task this season in any reliable role...
Now, the series finale was much better in terms of good spirits. So much has been said about Matt Kemp and how he already surpassed both Joel Guzman and James Loney as the Dodgers No1 prospect. And quite deservedly so :). Two crucial HRs to keep the game close.
I must say I was more worried about the Dodgers keeping their lead in the seventh than about them coming back after Jonathan Broxton got a rare BS :). Something told me that given the torrid hitting, and agreed - stroke of genius pinch-hitting by Grady Little - we'd be able to pull this one off from the hands of Mr. Fuentes. He was punished for taking things for granted - did you see how cocky he had been coming out from the bullpen? Good job guys!
(1) As soon as I called for Russell Martin to get some rest, all of the sudden he starts hitting like crazy! Martin is 13-for-34 in June, with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs, with .765 SLG!!
(2) This was only seventh game that Nomah went 0-fer since he came back on April 22. Pretty scary, huh?
(3) It was good to *watch* the Dodgers again on mlb.tv. The early afternoon West Coast games are always welcome in our household. I already convinced my 7-year old daughter to root for the "'Do-dgerrrz" (her original pronunciation) with me :). I'll keep working on my wife as well ;).
(4) Anyway, Aaron Sele takes the ball at Petco Field tonight against the San Diego Padres. It's high time we exercised some revenge for the games lost earlier in the season, which we should have won.
