Game 61: Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies 3:0

Another one of those rare shutouts for the Dodgers. And the first one this season with the starter (Brad Penny) going into the eight at reasonable pitch count. I remember reading somwhere very recently that the Dodgers always have at least one complete game per season (on second thoughts, is that right or am I missing something?).

Offhand it was also probably the first game this season in which Nomah got three strikeouts. He's been much more selective lately AFAIK.

Only a couple of minor points today:

(1) The imminent comeback of Jeff Kent will help out Willy Aybar greatly. Aybar's BA has been going down from .361 on May 26 to yesterdays's .298. He also got his hitting streak halted at 13. I think Aybar's been trying to do too much on daily basis and some well-deserved rest will only help him to regain his freshness. It's a good problem to have, I agree.

(2) So who's the first Dodger starter to record a complete game this season? I'm going to go out on the limb and predict that it's going to be Aaron Sele (due to very reasonable pitch counts).

(3) I'm taking bets on how long will the OBP phenomenon of Ramon Martinez last. I know we're enjoying it, but he's doomed to start getting tomkoed any day now. Will he keep his OBP over .400 by the end of June?

(4) I have already spoken on the Eric Gagne thing - go Broxton-Saito in the eight and nine innings and if/when Eric proves to be really back and healthy, move Jonathan and Takeshi to seventh and eight respectively. Play out this season as if Gagne was not available - if he is, good for us.

(5) Brett Tomko and Jason Jennings square off in Game 2 of the series. Given both pitchers' ERAs (both at about 4.50), I would really expect a high-scoring affair tonight. Hopefully with the Rockies getting the short end of the stick.
