Game 29: Dodgers vs San Diego Padres 0:3
Well, what a gem from, guess who from: Brett Tomko. The man who was brought over to eat up innings did his very job last night. 124 pitches, 7 full innings of 5-hit, no-run ball with 9K to his credit. I honestly believed for a while that our precious bullpen would not waste this opportunity. Silly me, I guess :).
Game notes written in blood:
(1) It took the National League less than 30 games to sort out Takeshi Saito offspeed breaking ball. I was tempted to believe that the bombing he took @Arizona was more resulting from bad luck and the ballpark than anything else, but the hanger to Khalil Greene taken deep for the deficit of the game proved otherwise. The opposing batters clearly sit on his offspeed and Saito is willing to deliver one or two of them during each at-bat. With the Japanese guy solved, I wonder if Joe Beimel's sinker is our last secret weapon ;).
(2) The players' time out due to injuries starts piling up: not only is Ricky Ledee out for at least a month (if not more), last night Dioner Navarro left with a bruised wrist (hit by foul ball, I understand), while Bill Mueller strained his knee making a play and left the game early as well. I just hope Navarro and Mueller are day-to-day and will be available after a day or two off. Fingers crossed.
(3) John Wiesman over at the DodgerThoughts.com speculates the unfortunate Navarro incident and age of Sandy Alomar may usher the debut of the young and hungry catcher Russell Martin. It's more probable to see him on Sunday at Chavez Ravine, than Chad Billingsley (not enough rest after his last pitching gem at Triple-A) or Manny Aybar.
(4) As you probably know by now, I watch most of the West Coast night games in the wee morning hours the following day my time. This calls for some extra morning activities to keep me awake between innings. The most popular include: ironing, writing e-mails, emptying the dish-washer, reading and taking shower (in no particular order ;)). Last night I found myself reversing the procedure though. Up till this time, I had been taking a shower during bottoms of the innings, thinking that if I missed a couple of runs for *us*, than the overall net result would be positive. However, last night for the first time I went to the shower in the top of the inning in order *not* to see a potential collapse of our bullpen... One inning too late... Any mind-readers here? What is it a sign of? ;).
(5) I am willing to actually pick up a phone and call Grady Little (if I ever get through) to find out why on earth he keeps Jason Repko rotting on the bench. J.D. Drew's been awesome but he's going to need a day off during the three game set vs Brewers. At the same time, Repko is doing everything Kenny Lofton can in CF and basepaths, so there's no reason not to give Jason a shot in CF more frequently.
(6) Dr. Derek Lowe will head the surgical procedure tonight at Chavez Ravine. It is meant to instill some life into the W-section of the Dodger record. The procedure might take two to three hours and if successful will bring the joyful side-effects to the Dodger Nation :).
