Game 54: Dodgers vs. Philadelphia Phillies 7:2
Happy Birthday Derek Lowe. The Philadelphia Phillies gave him a victory as a birthday present on Thursday night at Chavez Ravine. Lowe didn't have his best stuff, but against the Phillies it was more than good enough. Lowe improved to 4-3 on the year, winning his third consecutive start. In that span, his ERA has been an impressive 0.45. Could it be that we are finally seeing the Derek Lowe we had hopes to see after signing him as a free agent?
The Dodgers looked impressive on their way to their seventh straight victory at home. Eric Gagne was finally available for the first time this season, but the rookies made sure he wasn't needed.
In a game where seven rookies played at one point or another, it was the rookies who continued to shine. Matt Kemp went one for three with his first career major league homerun, a three run shot of the foul pole in the second inning. Willy Aybar went one for four and has a season batting average of .322
The kids had five of the Dodgers' nine hits in the game, with Russ Martin going two for four.
While the game was in progress, Joel Guzman arrived from Triple-A Las Vegas as replacement for injured Jeff Kent, who was put on the disabled list. Interesting enough, Guzman made his major league debut in the eighth at third base, rather than in the outfield where he has been switched to this season.
J.D. Drew went one for three with a three-run home run in the fourth. It was his ninth home run of the season. Nomar Garciaparra, while coming down to earth a little, continues to hit well with runners in scoring position. He is now batting .476 with RISP.
Some Questions:
1) With such a back log in the OF, who is the first to be sent down/traded?
2) Could the backlog in the OF be the reason Guzman made his debut at third base? Are the Dodgers reconsidering the switch?
3) The only player on the 40-man roster to not get called up as of yet is Andy LaRoche. It could be argued, which I would agree with, that he should have gotten the call up before Guzman. Guzman has been struggling as of late. Could this move be to display Guzman as trade bait?
